A Derry teenager will be hoping to win over the judges when she represents Northern Ireland at this year’s Miss/Mrs Africa Ireland contest.
Skhululekile Tsitsi Mupemhi (19) will travel to Co Meath on August 30 along with 12 other contestants, all hoping to be crowned the competition’s ‘Queen’.
Born in Zimbabwe, Skhululekile arrived in Derry with her family two years ago.
She recently completed her A-Levels at Oakgrove Integrated College and is hoping to get the results that will enable her to pursue a career in Biomedical Science.
For now though it is the Miss/Mrs Africa Ireland pageant that is receiving her full attention.
Skhululekile has modelled before, showcasing outfits at the popular One World Festival held annually in Derry.
But Miss/Mrs Africa will be a whole new experience, the teenager told the North West Migrants Forum.

“It’s really amazing. Living in Derry has given me so many opportunities and I’m just looking forward to seeing how it all goes on the night.”
Since moving to the north west Skhululekile has been volunteering with the African and Caribbean Community Network. It was there she was encouraged to put herself forward for the Miss/Mrs Africa pageant.
“I love working with young people and children,” she said.
“I get a buzz out of what they say and do and can relate to them in so many ways.
“Derry is a beautiful city and having being selected to represent Northern Ireland is a privilege. I hope to go down and give it my best.”
Asked how her family and friends have reacted to her making it all the way to the final stages of the prestigious event, Skhululekile said the support has been incredible.
“I can’t thank everyone enough for their wonderful support and advice over the past few weeks. Everyone is helping out in any way they can and the amazingly supportive messages online are so beautiful.”
Such an adventure does not come cheap though with wardrobe, accommodation and transport all to be paid for. With that in mind, Skhululekile is asking if anyone out there – local businesses, hairdressers, make-up artists – can assist her. If so they can get in touch with her on 07467311046 or email xulueangela@gmail.com.
The 19-year-old would also appreciate moral support. If anyone would like to travel for the event, she would love to hear from them.
The Miss/Mrs Africa Ireland pageant final takes place on August 30 in The Johnstown Estate, Co Meath.
